Following my previous post, I’ve put together a more comprehensive video of how I trim and handle these popular little dishes. The process is more or less the same for my medium, and large dishes, too (I just pull slightly larger handle blanks).

I attach the little side handles while the pot is still on the batt, which can get in the way but, it means that the body of the dish and handle are of a similar dryness, so less likely to reject each other and crack etc.

So much of pottery is about timing.

This picture happens to be made up of most of my best sellers sat, drying, waiting to be bisque fired.

I find myself restocking my miniature dishes, butter bells, and handless jugs most often! Perhaps because they are a little different, but also multi-functional, if that makes sense?

I also can’t not mention how many comments I get about the UK not having round butter, and the redundancy of a butter bell – but I still like making them, they are so visually appealing. And, it would seem, that most people aren’t too fussed about our lack of round butter anyway!

A little snippet of centering - coning up and coning down.

Centering is the start of the process of every thrown pot and coning is a way to help centre. Using the heel of your hands and squeezing together, the clay is forced upwards, into a cone shape. Coning down is a compression movement, where the cone of clay is compressed back down against the wheel head.

And voila, a centred ball of clay, ready to be worked!

These little cake plates are waiting for me to get

These little cake plates are waiting for me to get back into the studio tomorrow to trim them, under some sheets of plastic to stop them drying too quick or cracking.

They are a real pleasure to make as I use a slightly softer clay, which allows for smooth clay compression, without any wrist juddering!

One of these plates came out as a ‘second’ in a recent firing, so I gifted it to myself, and use it for my lunch breaks. Lo and behold, it is also a great sandwich plate, who knew.
